Spent

Just 6 days before Passover, Mary..

.the same gal who sat at Jesus' feet learning all she could from Him...

the same gal who watched Jesus's life...

the same gal who had to deal with the death of her brother in the midst of her confusion and love for Christ...

the same gal who was challenged in the waiting that made no sense..

.the same gal who saw Him weep and then watch Him raise her brother from the dead...

the same gal on her own....with family & others in the room poured out what was costly to her because she knew Jesus' worth.

Intimacy. She worshipped because she loved...because she knew His love.

Judas had seen all this. He had followed Jesus too but kept his heart far and his own ambition close. He managed his devotion to Christ, keeping the back door ajar.

Just 6 days before Passover, Judas saw true worship before his eyes and critiqued it and tried to look noble in doing it. But he was a thief. I'd argue he wanted a piece of the glory he wasn't getting. What he saw was too much.

Less than a week later, Jesus humbled himself to wash Judas's feet the night before Passover. Judas' heart was unmoved (as Pharoah's was the original Passover night in Egypt). Just 6 days after Mary wiped Jesus's feet, and the very night God humbled himself to wash Judas's own feet, Judas betrayed Jesus for less than Mary's perfume was worth. He thought he gained power & leverage. He thought he had it figured out. He missed it all. A lot got revealed the night Judas betrayed Jesus, but you could already see it in his heart 6 days before. So before the crowds, branches, & shouts of hosanna...something of worth had already been cracked and was being poured out.

As the week went on, the hell of it grew. But the glory of the One enduring it overshadowed the darkness. He kept His Word. A week later, Mary’s eyes got to see what she couldn’t just 1 week before even in her devotion.

In retrospect, she was preparing for His burial, but He wanted to prepare her for His resurrection. It’s one thing to see sunrise. It’s another thing to see what rose on Easter. And I bet it came with song.
